ATR Channel Breakouta level that moves with volatility
Every other level in this book is fixed once it is drawn. This one is not: the channel sits a set number of average true ranges away from a moving average, so it widens when the market gets loud and tightens when it goes quiet.
That changes what a break means. Closing two ATR above the average is the same event in a calm market and a violent one, which no fixed level can claim.
The evidence here is for what happens when resting orders trigger, not for this way of drawing the level. The level is a choice; the cascade behind it is the mechanism.

Exact rules
Entry
- Trend filter: price above the EMA(50) means long breaks only. Taking the other side of this channel is a mean-reversion strategy and it is in a different book.
- Trigger: a candle closes above the upper channel — EMA(20) plus 2 × ATR(10).
- Enter at the next bar's open.
- Skip if the channel has widened more than 40% in the last five bars: the volatility arrived before the break, which is the signature of a spike rather than a move.
Stop loss
- At the centre line, the EMA(20).
- The stop is therefore as adaptive as the level — in a volatile stretch both are wide, and the position size is what absorbs it.
- Risk 0.5%–1%.
Take profit / exit
- No fixed target. Trail at the centre line.
- Exit when a candle closes back inside the channel.
- A partial at 2R is a reasonable variant, tested separately.

More from Breakout
Trading carries risk and most retail accounts lose money. Nothing on this page is financial advice or a recommendation to trade. The chart is an illustration of the rules on constructed candles — it is not a record of a trade and not a backtest.
