Drawing Support and Resistancerules, so that two people get the same lines

Evidence: ModerateBeginnerFoundations · Levels

Levels are the best-supported idea in retail technical analysis and the worst-specified. Everyone agrees they matter; almost nobody writes down how to draw one, which is why two traders looking at the same chart produce different lines and then disagree about whether the level held.

This page is the specification. It is rated Moderate because the mechanism behind levels is real — orders rest at prices many people can see — and because a mechanical drawing rule is what makes that mechanism testable.

This is one of the first methods most traders meet. That popularity is a reason for caution rather than confidence — an edge available to everyone for decades is unlikely to still be sitting there.

A fractal swing rule · ATR(14) to set the zone's width

Valid setup

FD-08 · DRAWING SUPPORT AND RESISTANCE — THE SPECIFICATION GBPJPY · H4 · a zone of 0.2 × ATR either side of a confirmed swing, drawn once and never moved REFERENCE 190.28 190.77 191.26 191.76 192.25 192.74 193.23 THE ZONE — 0.2 × ATR(14) either side of the swing price THE SWING PRICE — the zone's centre, not the level itself 1 2 3 4 191.80 ① First touch — a price, not yet a level ② Second touch — now it is tradeable ③ Third. Each test consumes the orders that made it real ④ It breaks on the fourth — which is the usual outcome ⑤ The zone was never widened to keep a trade alive ⑥ A line would have been missed by two pips all day

Exact rules

Entry

  • A level starts as a confirmed swing point by a written fractal rule — not as a place that looks important.
  • It becomes tradeable at the second touch. One touch is a price; two is a level. Do not trade the first.
  • Draw it as a zone, not a line: the swing price plus or minus 0.2 × ATR(14). Price does not respect exact numbers and a line will be missed by two pips all day.
  • Never move a level after drawing it. If it is wrong, it is wrong — record that and leave it. Adjusting levels to fit what price did is how this becomes unfalsifiable.

Stop loss

  • For any trade at a level: beyond the far edge of the zone, plus a buffer.
  • The zone's width is what makes that stop meaningful. A stop just beyond a line is inside the noise the zone exists to describe.
  • Risk as the strategy using the level specifies.

Take profit / exit

  • The next level in that direction, drawn by the same rule and drawn before the trade rather than after it.
  • Each test consumes orders, so a level gets weaker with use, not stronger. Three or four touches and it is likely to break.
  • Prefer levels that are visible on the higher timeframe. More participants can see them, which is the entire mechanism.
