Weekend Gap Reversionthe overreaction with its own paper

Evidence: StrongIntermediateMean reversion · Calendar

Two days of news arrive into a market that cannot trade, and on Monday it all prints at once. The opening gap is a single, forced repricing with no liquidity behind it — which is the textbook condition for an overreaction.

This is the only page in this book with FX-specific research on the exact effect, rather than on reversion in general: a documented reversal after significant weekend price differences in spot foreign exchange.

The trade is to fade the gap toward Friday's close, sized small, with the whole thing over by Monday's European close.

Exact rules

Entry

  • Measure the gap: Monday's open against Friday's close, in units of daily ATR.
  • Size gate: trade only gaps between 0.3 and 1.2 × ATR(14). Smaller is noise; larger is usually genuine news and is not this trade.
  • News gate: skip entirely if the gap follows a weekend event — an election, a central bank statement, a geopolitical shock. Those gaps are repricings and they do not close.
  • Trigger: wait for the first M15 candle that closes back in the direction of Friday's close. Enter at that close.
  • One trade per pair per week. No adding.

Stop loss

  • Beyond the Monday extreme, plus 0.3 × ATR(14) on D1.
  • If price extends past that extreme, the gap was information rather than overreaction.
  • Risk 0.25%–0.5% — below normal, because Monday liquidity is thin and slippage is worse than the chart suggests.

Take profit / exit

  • Friday's close. That is the level the gap opened away from, and it is the whole thesis.
  • Flat by the European close on Monday whether or not the gap has filled. After that you are holding a directional position for no reason.
  • A partial at half the gap is a reasonable variant, tested separately.
