ATR Expansion Continuationjoin the bar that broke the quiet

Evidence: ModerateIntermediateVolatility · Expansion

The opposite trade to a contraction breakout. Here the expansion has already happened — one bar has a true range far larger than anything around it — and the question is whether to join it or fade it.

The clustering evidence points at joining: a large range predicts more large ranges. What it does not predict is the sign, so this strategy takes its direction from the expansion bar itself and treats that as an assumption rather than a finding.

The evidence here is for volatility clustering — quiet periods follow quiet periods and loud follow loud. That is well established. Which direction the expansion goes is a separate question, and this page is honest about how much less the evidence says about it.

Exact rules

Entry

  • Expansion bar: true range of the closing bar is at least 2 × ATR(14).
  • Direction gate: the bar closes in the upper third of its own range for a long, lower third for a short. A big bar that closes in the middle is a fight, not a decision.
  • Context gate: the close is on the correct side of the EMA(50). This is an assumption, and dropping it is a legitimate variant to test.
  • Enter on the open of the next bar, not the close of the expansion bar. Chasing the close of a 2 × ATR bar is where this strategy's worst fills come from.

Stop loss

  • The midpoint of the expansion bar's own range.
  • That is deliberately inside the bar. If price returns to the middle of the move that started this, the reason for the trade is gone.
  • Risk 0.5%.

Take profit / exit

  • TP1 at 1R.
  • TP2 at 2R.
  • Time stop: out after eight bars regardless. The clustering effect decays quickly and holding past it is holding on hope.
