Cumulative Delta — and Why It Is Not on Your Chartthe order flow tool retail spot FX does not have

Evidence: WeakProfessionalOrder flow · Data

Cumulative delta is the running total of volume that traded at the ask minus volume that traded at the bid — a genuine measure of which side was more aggressive. On a futures exchange it is real data and it is genuinely informative.

On a retail spot FX feed it does not exist. There is no consolidated tape to classify, so any spot 'delta' indicator is inferring the sign from where price closed inside the bar. That is a price indicator wearing order flow's clothes, and traders pay for it believing otherwise.

This page is here so the distinction is written down, and so the version that does work has somewhere to be described.

Exact rules

Entry

  • If you trade currency futures: cumulative delta is available and the classic use is divergence — price makes a new low while cumulative delta does not, meaning the selling was less aggressive than the price move suggests.
  • Require the divergence to occur at a level, as with every other page in this family. Divergence in open space is not a setup.
  • Trigger: a close back above the swing that formed the divergence.
  • If you trade spot: you do not have this tool. The nearest honest substitute is the relative activity filter in this book, and it is a weaker claim.

Stop loss

  • Beyond the extreme that created the divergence, plus an ATR buffer.
  • On futures, also exit if cumulative delta makes a new low — the reason for the trade is the delta, not the price.
  • Risk 0.5%.

Take profit / exit

  • TP1 at 2R, TP2 at the prior swing.
  • Time stop at fifteen bars — delta divergence is a short-horizon reading.
  • Before buying any indicator that promises order flow on a spot pair, ask the seller which tape it classifies. There is no answer to that question, and knowing that is worth more than the indicator.
