Session Volatility Windowtrade the hours that actually move

Evidence: StrongIntermediateVolatility · Seasonality

Intraday volatility in FX is not flat and it is not random across the day. It follows a shape driven by which financial centres are awake, and that shape is one of the most stable patterns in the whole market — stable enough that high-frequency researchers have to remove it before they can model anything else.

This strategy does the opposite of removing it. It confines every trade to the two or three hours where the market genuinely moves, and it treats the rest of the day as closed.

It is a filter, not a signal. Bolt it onto any intraday strategy in this library and it is usually the single cheapest improvement available.

Exact rules

Entry

  • Build the profile first: average the true range of every hour of the day across at least six months of your own broker's data. You will see the shape immediately.
  • Trade only in the top three hours of that profile. For the European majors that is normally the London open and the London–New York overlap.
  • Within the window, use whatever entry trigger the strategy you are filtering calls for — a break, a pullback, a level.
  • No new positions outside the window. Not a preference; a rule.

Stop loss

  • As the underlying strategy specifies, but sized against the ATR of that hour rather than the day's ATR.
  • This is the part people miss: a stop sized for the daily average is far too tight at 08:00 and far too wide at 03:00.
  • Risk 0.5%.

Take profit / exit

  • Flat at the end of the window. The reason for being in the trade expires with the hour.
  • If the underlying strategy has a longer horizon, carry it — but then it is not this strategy any more, and it should be tested as its own thing.
  • Never hold an intraday position into the Asian session on the argument that it is 'still valid'. The range that made it valid has gone.

More from Volatility

Trading carries risk and most retail accounts lose money. Nothing on this page is financial advice or a recommendation to trade. The chart is an illustration of the rules on constructed candles — it is not a record of a trade and not a backtest.
