Proximity to the 52-Week Highhow close to the top of the range, rather than how far it has come
A different way of measuring the same effect. Instead of ranking by return, rank by how close price is to its own twelve-month high. The two rankings often disagree, and the difference is informative.
The idea comes from equity research, where George and Hwang found that proximity to the 52-week high predicted returns better than past return did — with the usual explanation being anchoring: traders treat a familiar high as a ceiling and under-react when it is passed.
The evidence is for return persistence — instruments that have gone up tend to keep going up for a while. Every page here is one way of measuring that, and the measurement is a choice while the effect is the finding.

Entry
- Measure proximity: close ÷ the highest high of the last 50 bars. Above 0.98 is 'near the high'.
- Fifty bars is a proxy, not the research's number. The equity work uses 52 weeks of daily data; if your platform can supply a full year, use it and say so in your notes.
- Entry: a daily close that makes a new 50-bar high while proximity has been above 0.98 for at least five days.
- Rank across instruments if you trade several — this is naturally a cross-sectional rule and works less well as a single-instrument timer.
Stop loss
- 2 × ATR(20) below entry.
- Exit if proximity falls below 0.93 — price has left the zone the effect is about.
- Risk 0.5%–1%.
Take profit / exit
- No target. Trail at 2.5 × ATR(20) behind the high, as in the exits book.
- The effect is described over months. A version of this held for days is not the strategy the research supports.
- Expect to be wrong often near the high and occasionally very right. That shape is the whole of it.
